It's Finally Here!
Construction started October 5, 2009 on the new Franklin County Dog Shelter & Adoption Center
It's finally here! After years of planning we officially started construction of the new facility on Monday, October 5th at 11 am.
The new Franklin County Dog Shelter and Adoption Center at 4340 Tamarack Boulevard on the north side will take approximately 14 months to complete, opening in early 2011. The footprint will be nearly three times as big as our current shelter, with more than 48,000 square feet of space. The new shelter will have many advantages compared to the current shelter which was opened in 1979.
Some of the many improvements for the dogs include additional kennels, increasing total capacity to 421 dogs, larger runs (4'x9') all on ground level, an indoor exercise space, seperate exercise yards for adoption and lost dogs, designated rooms for puppies and smaller dogs, and even 41 "real-life" rooms for longer-term residents which will allow dogs to have real dog beds, toys and maybe even a roommate to keep them company!
