Biological Hazard - Cincinnati. Ohio

A Norwood pet resort in Cincinnati remains closed after several dogs became mysteriously sick and died. The Pet Spot says on its Facebook page that its independent investigation could not find a definite cause of what may have made the dogs sick, but it will remain closed until lab results from Ohio State are released later this week. The dogs were healthy one day then developed bloody diarrhea and bloody vomiting the next. The ones that died didn't respond to treatment. The Ohio Department of Agriculture put out a statement urging dog owners to monitor their dogs, but so far there haven't been any cases outside southwest Ohio. Meanwhile in Northeast Ohio, vets are seeing an increase in another problem -- a respiratory illness that's unlike the typical kennel cough or respiratory infections. Dr. Kane Henderson of West Park Animal Hospital warns pet owners to pay attention for signs of cough, lethargy, lack of appetite, vomiting and diarrhea. If seen, seek medical attention for the animal immediately. Some speculated the dog illness might have been related to an Iams dog food voluntary recall for suspected salmonella contamination, but none of the dogs involved in the Cincinnati case ate that dog food.
