New program aims at animal welfare education

A new program is being developed on P.E.I. to inform people about their rights and responsibilities when it comes the welfare of animals.
David Daughton, the executive director of the Community Legal Information Association of P.E.I., told CBC News the program will tell people about the laws regarding the treatment of animals.
Daughton said the program will outline, "what the issues are around wildlife protection, also just basic issues around what constitutes animal abuse. If you do believe you're witnessing animal abuse," he said, "what you can do about it, what the enforcement mechanisms are, those kind of issues."
Daughton said the program has been in the works for a while, but that the program is timely with recent animal welfare cases making the news on P.E.I.

A week and a half ago, a dog was found drowned in a pillowcase, then a few days later another dog was injured when it was shot with a hunting arrow.
The information will be featured in brochures and on the association website and will likely be distributed in schools in the province.
The association is working with Animal Justice Canada on the project.
Daughton says the program will be launched in the fall.
