San Pedro Halts Dog Poisoning!

VICTORIES FOR THE ANIMALS

UPDATE.

As you know, the town of San Pedro, which is located on the island of Ambergris Caye in Belize, was planning to use strychnine to kill additional homeless and roaming dogs in the community, despite the existence of an open-admission animal shelter on the island that was willing to take in unwanted dogs and find them homes or provide euthanasia by injection if they could not be safely placed.
Thank you to everyone who spoke out—your voice was heard! San Pedro Mayor Daniel Guerrero has agreed to halt the poisoning of dogs and work with the Saga Humane Society on a formal plan to take homeless dogs to the animal shelter. The mayor and the Saga Humane Society staff are planning an official announcement, but we couldn’t wait to tell you how your e-mails paid off for dogs!

PAST PETA ACTION ALERT:

to a recent news report , Daniel Guerrero, the mayor of San Pedro, which is located on the island of Ambergris Caye in Belize, has stated that poisoning local dogs via strychnine is “the only option we have to eradicate dogs. That is the method available to us from the Health Department.” Thirty-one dogs on the island have reportedly already been killed via strychnine poisoning. However, the Saga Humane Society , which operates an animal shelter on the island, has offered to supply housing for the homeless dogs, give them a chance at adoption if healthy and socialized, and provide peaceful euthanasia by intravenous injection (EBI) of sodium pentobarbital for those who can’t be put up for adoption. Veterinary and sheltering experts agree that EBI is the only humane method of euthanasia for homeless companion animals.
Strychnine is a potent convulsant. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Guidelines on Euthanasia, strychnine and other agents that “induce muscle paralysis without loss of consciousness are not acceptable as sole agents for euthanasia.” Dogs poisoned with strychnine suffer increased reflex excitability in the spinal cord that results in loss of normal motor cell function: All their muscles contract simultaneously.Poisoned animals are conscious and aware, and they suffer intense pain before they finally die.
Please send polite correspondence to Mayor Guerrero today. Urge him to take the Saga Humane Society up on its offer to give homeless dogs a chance at finding a loving home—or, if ill, injured, aggressive, or unsocialized, a peaceful release from a world that has abandoned and betrayed them.
